Access Improvement Project a Success!

Improved access for anglers at Billy’s Lake funded by rod license money from the Angling Trust!

The hard work and dedication of our Volunteers, Community Payback, and Maebill Builders & Groundworks Ltd has meant we have been able to provide anglers with improved fishing swims.
We’ve installed new lake edging, widened and installed a new path, and installed 2 fishing platforms, making the area more accessible year-round, even for those with mobility problems and wheelchair users.

We hope you enjoy!

Burning brash and enjoying some marshmallows on the fire!

Willow weaving at Billy’s Lake

Today we were joined by Louise and Penny from the Sustainability Centre who taught us how to weave a willow fence!

When the next supply of willow is available in November we will be able to finish it.

Young volunteers at Billy’s Lake

We had a fun day at the lake last week with our young volunteers. We were also joined by Jo from Motiv 8, Dave and Sue from Horizon Angling Club for the Disabled and Caroline from Webiglocal Wecock Farm. Good work everyone!

Funds raised for the Billy’s Lake Project

Well done and thank you, David!
On the 20th April David Benjamin (2nd from right) and friends began the 3 Peaks Challenge – Ben Nevis (1344 mtrs, highest mountain in Scotland and Britain), Scafell Pike (978mtrs) and Snowden (1085mtrs).
David raised an amazing £335.18 for the Billy’s Lake Project. Thanks to Lainey who sponsored David with April’s bookstall takings of £131.68 too.
As well as working at B&Q Havant, David also works at Off the Record in Havant where he runs the Duke of Edinburgh Awards for 14-24 year olds. (https://www.dofe.org/).
We will be using the money to build a fish refuge with local children! This will allow fish to spawn, hide from predating birds and take shade. It will also encourage invertebrates and vegetation on top of the refuge.

A visit from Denmead Scouts

Big thanks to Denmead Scout Group for coming to Billy’s Lake and helping to remove some of the brash piles last night!

Steps

New Steps and Handrails

Installation of steps down to the lake

The steps and handrails leading down to Swims 1, 2 and 3 were installed a few years ago and they are now showing signs of wear and tear.  This week we have made a start on reconstruction and improvement of these steps, starting with Swim 1.  We are hoping to accomplish this by volunteer effort alone, since it would be very expensive to engage commercial contractors and we currently lack sufficient funding to do so.  It will be a gradual process, so please bear with us – and feel free to offer any expertise, physical assistance and help with materials costs, if you are able to contribute!

Bat Detecting Evening

As the sun went down at Billy’s Lake, the bats came out to see us!

We welcomed Nik Knight from Hampshire Bat Group and his colleague Natalie who taught us about our local bats and how to use bat detecting equipment to tune into the bats’ sound frequency which allows us to hear them.
