We have long wanted to help members of our community learn and develop practical skills. For a while there was plastering in the Hall (the scars are still there), but practical projects are messy, need storage and often power tools!
Our first problem was that there was no suitable space in the Centre. For one project we even considered using a container in the car park! The thoughts moved onto an extension, with the funding and the planning that it would require. Funding was found through the Community Infrastructure Levy paid by the builders of the new houses at the back of our estate, through Wecock Big Local, from some of our reserves and matched funding from Hampshire County Council. We are now in the development phase, welcoming all who are interested to come and be involved, to be trained and become confident in both the hand and the power tools. Health and Safety is very important and all members of the Workshop are encouraged to remind those not operating safely of the requirements! Scott, the Centre Supervisor, is able to open the Workshop on Wednesday afternoons and we looking for funding to allow him to give more time and continue supporting and growing a team of volunteers so that this exciting space can be used more. |
